The Vereda do Fanal (PR13) is a picturesque hiking trail on Madeira Island, connecting the Paul da Serra plateau to the enchanting Fanal Forest. Spanning approximately 11 kilometers, this moderate hike typically takes around 3 to 4 hours to complete. Along the route, hikers are treated to diverse landscapes, including expansive views over the Rabaçal Valley and immersive sections through the UNESCO-listed Laurisilva Forest. The trail culminates in the Fanal Forest, renowned for its ancient, mist-enshrouded trees that create a mystical atmosphere.

Levada do Rei, or PR18, is a picturesque hiking trail located in São Jorge, on the north coast of Madeira Island. Stretching approximately 5.3 kilometres each way (10.6 km round trip), the trail takes around 3.5 hours to complete and is rated as moderately difficult.
The route begins near the Water Treatment Plant in Quebradas, São Jorge, and initially passes through areas of exotic vegetation, offering scenic views over the agricultural landscapes of São Jorge and Santana. As the trail unfolds, it leads into the heart of the Laurisilva forest — a UNESCO World Heritage site — where hikers are immersed in Madeira’s native flora and fauna. The lush environment, combined with the soothing sound of flowing water, makes this hike a serene and enriching experience in the island’s pristine natural surroundings.
